Placement Process • DEC1 : Reason for Referral • DEC2 : Permission to Test • DEC3 : Test Results • DEC4 : Individual Education Plan • DEC 5 : Consent to Place All of these forms happen at an IEP meeting made up of the Case Manager, School Psychologist, Regular Education Teacher, Special Education Teacher, Student and Parent
Placement Options • OHI – Other Health Impaired • SLD – Specific Learning Disability • ID – Intellectually Disabled • SED – Seriously Emotionally Disabled • OI – Orthopedically Impaired • HI – Hearing Impaired • SI – Speech Impaired • VI – Visually Impaired
Settings • Consultative – EC teacher works directly with teacher • CO-OP – The EC teacher works with several students in the regular classroom • Resource – The EC student goes to room for small group instruction with the EC teacher for a portion of the day • Separate – The EC student spends the entire day with the EC teacher
OHI • The student has a diagnosed physical or mental impairment that makes them unable to learn without specialized instruction and modifications. Examples are ADHD, Bi-Polar Disorder, Epilepsy, and Depression.
SLD • The student is of average or above intelligence, but has academic skills that are significantly lower. They required different learning techniques to acquire and demonstrate knowledge.
ID • The student’s intellectual abilities are significantly below average for his age. Adaptive skills are also impaired. There are 3 levels. • Mild (IDMI) • Moderate (IDMO) • Severe/Profound (IDSP) • This student will require significantly more time to learn.
SED • The student has difficulty performing in the classroom despite average ability because of emotional or behavioral issues. They will require a great deal of help managing and changing their behaviors.
HI, VI, SI, OI • Because of conditions like deafness, blindness, being unable to walk, or communication difficulties, the student will require modifications to learn.
Factors Considered • Attendance – EC placement can’t occur if there are excessive absences. Lack of instruction is not a disability. Tardies and frequent moves here. • ESL – If you do not speak the language, you will have difficulty learning in English • Significant Deficit – EC is for students who are performing SIGNIFICANTLY below grade level. That means below C. EC is not a tutoring program.
What EC Does • The EC program uses individualized strategies and modifications to the learning environment and/or curriculum to help the student experience success in school.
The Goal of the EC Program • To help each child be as successful as possible and to have a positive school experience. • To help each child acquire the skills they need to grow up and be productive citizens.
