Aggregate Reporting of Pandemic Influenza Vaccine Doses Administered Update for Option 1 Users Joint Presentation by: Immunization Services Division National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases and Division of Emergency Preparedness and Response National Center for Public Health Informatics Webinar Presentation to Public Health Project Areas October 10, 2007
Agenda • Background on Aggregate Reporting • Refresher and Update on Pilot Test • Checklist Items • Demonstration of CRA • Next Steps • Available Resources
Background • The National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza: Implementation Plan calls for monitoring of the appropriate use of a scarce pandemic influenza vaccine • To accomplish this, states/ project areas will track vaccine doses administered, collect and aggregate minimum data elements and transmit weekly to CDC • CDC’s CRA system was modified to provide three ways for states and partners to report vaccine doses administered
Background: Options for Aggregate Reporting to CDC • Option 1: For states and project areas collecting data via an existing immunization information system (IIS) or other application, technical specifications were developed for three different data exchange formats: flat file (pipe-delimited), XML file, HL 7 • Option 2: For states and project areas collecting data manually, an aggregate reporting screen was added to CDC’s CRA application to allow direct data entry via a web browser • Option 3: For states and project areas using CDC’s CRA application to collect patient level information, selected data elements will be automatically aggregated
Pandemic Influenza Doses Administered Pilot Reporting Event (PIDAPRE) • CDC and the project areas will test options during the influenza season • Evaluate project area capabilities to aggregate and send a subset of data • Evaluate CDC technical system capabilities to accept and report aggregate vaccine doses administered
Why is the Pilot Test Necessary ? • Operational Perspective • To assess the ability to collect and report vaccine doses administered data and to provide perspective on federal, project area, and clinic needs in order to scale-up for a pandemic situation • Technical Perspective • To assess the technical ability of systems to receive, aggregate, and return data, to identify and address system gaps and to test tooling options and security aspects for federal and state partners
Data Expected from the Project Area • Will include (required) • Age • 6 – 23 months • 2 – 18 years • 19 – 49 years • 50 – 64 years • 65+ years • Project Area ID • Date of Clinic(s)
Update on PIDAPRE • CDC and the project areas will test options during the influenza season • Pilot test November 1st – December 31st • To date we have received option choices from 61 project areas
Project Area Option Choices 31 22 8 1 61 out of 62 project areas have submitted their reporting option choices.

Check list for Option 1 *Full checklist available at www.cdc.gov/phin/cra
Option 1 Progress To Date • Breakout of transport options • 15 PHINMS Messaging (automatic) • 7 CRA Application Upload (manual) • 1 unconfirmed • Breakout of file format options • 15 XML • 7 pipe delimited • 0 HL7 • 1 unconfirmed • Clinic Dates • 12 Confirmed or have been received • Project areas have started to send sample files
Frequently Asked Questions • Can a project area choose one reporting option initially and then switch to another reporting option in the future? • Can a count of zero (0) be sent? Do you want all possible categories listed in the file or only those with a count greater than zero? • The Data Exchange document shows 2 date formats, mm/dd/yyyy and yyyy-mm-dd; which one is valid? • Is there an XML schema available?
PIDAPRE Option 1 Demonstration • Upload Aggregate File • Check Aggregate File Status • Generate Extract of Aggregate Data
