The Trellis and the Vine “Therefore GO and MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations…”
1 Thess 1: 1-8 “Paul, Silas and Timothy,To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and Peace to you. We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.”
“For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you not simply with words, but with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became IMITATORS of us and of the Lord, in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a MODEL to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere.”
Simple Plan: V5: “You know how we lived among you for your sake V6: “You became imitators of us and of the Lord” V7: “And so you became a model to all the believers…” MODELING IMITIATION MODELING
1 Thessalonians 2:7-12 “…but we were gentle among you, like a MOTHER caring for her little children. We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God BUT OUR LIVES AS WELL, because you had become so dear to us. Surely you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.”
“You are witnesses and so is God of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. For you know that we dealt with each of you as a FATHER deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting, and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.”
How did the Elders live among them? 1) Gentle and nurturing like a MOTHER2) Love compels them to share their live 3) Toiled, worked night and day to bless and edify these people 4) Preached the gospel 5) Lived holy, righteous, blameless lives in front of them 6) Expressed FATHER’S authority and discipline andencouragment: encouraging, comforting, urging
1 Thessalonians 2:17-20 “But brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing, we made every effort to see you. For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan stopped us. For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, YOU ARE OUR GLORY and JOY.”
FOCUS IS ON THE PEOPLE • Not the ABC’s of churchAttendanceBuildingCash • But the “D” of church:Discipleship
Questions to consider: • In your ministry, has the focus been on the program and not the people? Are people in your ministry growing in Christ-likeness? • Are you leading in a way where you can say “imitate me”? • When’s the last time you made a disciple? When is the last time you’ve discipled somebody? • Is your ministry defined by love, intimacy, holiness, fullness of God’s presence---all the vine stuff? Or is it defined more by schedules, tasks, duties, events?
