California has many places to visit. People go to San Diego, Los Angeles, and other cities. Families visit theme parks such as SeaWorld and Disneyland. Other people come to California to see national parks. They visit Yosemite National Park and Redwood National Park. They also go to see deserts such as the Mojave Desert and Death Valley.

Some maps show states and countries. • A country is an area of land with its own people and laws. Egypt is our country. It has 26 governorates. • Lines on a map show borders. A border is where a state or country ends.

Why it matters • We live on Earth. You can use a globe to find places on Earth. A globe is a model of Earth.
What You Need to Know • A map is flat, but a globe is round. It shows what Earth looks like from space. • Like a map, a globe shows locations of places. Each large area of land is a continent. Each large body of water is an ocean.
Practice the skill • Look at the drawings of a globe. Find and name the continent on which you live. • Use your finger to follow the border around South America. • Which ocean is between Australia and Africa? • Look at a globe. Find and name the seven continents and the four oceans.

When Kim’s family moved to a new city, Kim and her dad took a walk around their new neighborhood. A neighborhood is a part of a town or city. Kim’s dad showed her a map of the neighborhood. They found the location of Kim’s new school. Kim took pictures of places as they walked.
Later, Kim and her dad looked at the pictures. The pictures showed some of the places on the map. The places in the pictures and the places on the map looked different.
Kim used her pictures and the map to make a model of places in her neighborhood. Pictures and maps are flat, but you can look at a model from all sides. When Kim looks down at the top of her model, it is like looking at a map.

Different parts of Earth have different kinds of land. People can live near mountains or forests, on hills, or in valleys or deserts. They can also live by lakes, rivers, or the ocean.
Each kind of land has resources. A resource is anything that people can use. Soil, trees, and water are some of Earth’s resources. • A place’s location, land, and resources affect what people eat, where they live, and how they move around.
People use resources to grow food on farms. A farm is a place for growing plants and raising animals. Many kinds of food that you eat come from farms all over the country.
People who live near water often fish for food. People in other places grow trees to get food. Fruits and nuts grow on trees. • People need shelter. A shelter is a home. People in different places build different kinds of shelters.
People also need transportation. • Transportation is any way of moving people and things from place to place. Transportation can be by land, water, or air.

What You Need to Know • The four main directions are called cardinal directions. They are north, south, east, and west. If you face north, west is on your left. East is on your right. South is behind you.
