  1. Continue and expand the programs of informal science education based at Powdermill to answer and sustain community interest in ecology, natural history, and ecosystem management. • Weave Powdermill programs into CMNH as a whole by increasing the involvement of scientific staff in Oakland with the activities at Powdermill through targeted tours, lectures, and by providing content for public programs at Powdermill. • Increase regional visibility throughout Pennsylvania, Appalachia, and the Ohio Valley by an expanded program of hosting formal courses in connection with area community groups, colleges and universities on topics of special expertise. • Promote targeted experiences and research agendas for select communities that benefit from our unique platform, including internal grant funding.

  2. Continue facility development: Field laboratory, computers. Drying oven, freezer, dissection microscope, fume hood, centrifuge.

  3. Expand long term projects: Pollinator conservation, land management. Partners: Penn State, USDA, York University (Toronto), Ohio State, etc.

  4. Expand long term projects: Ecology of invasive species

  5. Expand long term projects: Forensic entomology Ecotoxicology, others Partners: Sam Houston State, Western Carolina, Ohio State (possibly California University of Pennsylvania)

  6. St. Lawrence gives to the poor Establish endowment that offers modest grants, $5k-$10K , to student researchers to fund projects on PNR grounds. Seed money for “brainstorming” workshops to attract scientists of all sorts to PNR for a few days to introduce a broad community to our facility. Host meetings of various sorts, such as “annual retreats,” for regional institutions that have potential research interests aligned with PNR goals. These are “gifts” that represent investments toward our future by attracting people we chose to the Powdermill Nature Reserve.

  7. Expand educational programs: Workshops range from community networks, such as YMCA partnerships, to general interest "Appalachian wildflowers," and expert technical topics such as “Quantitative Phylogenetic Methods." Partners already identified: Ligonier YMCA, Duquesne University, St. Vincent College, Juniata College, and Allegheny College.

  8. WebBlog: Appalachian Backyard This Week.

  11. The red dots indicate the latitude and longitude location of each sample site. The red dots indicate the latitude and longitude location of each sample site.

  12. Each sample site location that is selected with the identify tool in ArcGIS will reveal the scientific names, quantity of the macro invertebrates and the date collected. This will help track seasonal changes in the biology of a stream.

  13. All macro invertebrates have a unique Taxonomic Serial Number (TSN). This unique number and species information can be accessed through the Integrated Taxonomic Information System.

  14. Powdermill will host and sponsor an EPA Workshop on macroinvertebrate ID and certification for identifiers, Dec 12-16. About a dozen DEP people, half as many local watershed people.
