Measurement Science and Systems Engineering (MSSE) • MSSE performs applied R&D in measurement science associated with … Robotics Electronics Signals / Patterns Sensors Communications Systems • We perform and support research in • Energy research (DOE, NRC, DOD, Industry, …) • National security (NNSA, DHS, DOD, DARPA, …) • Biomedical engineering (OBER, NIH, DARPA, DOD, TATRC …) • Basic Science (DOE, DARPA, …) • U.S. Competitiveness (U.S. Industry, WFO, …)
Measurement Science • We research and produce highly accurate and precise measurement technologies for complex, harsh, and high data-volume environments VACNF arrays for measuring neuro-electrical activity (neuronal interface): can resolve neurotransmitters at sub-attomolar concentrations PHENIX detector subsystem: 300,000 readout channels, 40 ms refresh rate, timing resolution <25ps Holographic microscopy: 1nm precision, metrology and motion (3D trajectory) MEMS/NEMS devices to measure small displacements (0.1pm/Hz-1/2), mass (10fg), and chemical concentration (ppt) Plasma temperature for Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF): 0.1-20MK
Systems Engineering • We have significant strengths in our ability to produce unique, complex, and robust integrated systems that meet the operating requirements of diverse environments and applications Navy underwater acoustics measurement facility Army rad-hardened chemical and biological mass spectrometer Electronics for high-energy physics at RHIC Microscopy system semiconductor industry High-resolution multi-modal pre-clinical scanner for industry Human amplification platform for Navy
Biomedical Engineering Preclinical anatomic and functional imaging • Our biomedical engineering research enables measurements and analysis that impact human health in a number of important areas Image-based diagnosis and screening NIR imaging and 3D tissue modeling Nano-structured substrates for tissue scaffolding Transplant tissue monitoring systems Intraoperative surgical imaging Quantitative phase imaging of biological materials http://www.uchsc.edu/sm/chs/browse/browse_m.html
DOE OBER Conclusion • MSSE was formed in 2008 to build upon sixty years of scientific and engineering research at ORNL • Today we perform R&D in electronics, signals, patterns, communications, and informatics • Applying our skills and experience to the field of biomedical science has become an important research area for the applied science organizations at ORNL …
