1. Senior School Music Department – Information for Year 7 Parents Dear Parents, Welcome to the Senior School Music Department. Please take the time to read through the following information to ensure that your child has all the necessary equipment for Year 7 lessons. Curriculum Lessons One of the most important part of the Year 7 curriculum is developing your child’s ability to read music and to perform confidently on an instrument. For this reason we ask that all students purchase a Descant Recorder by the end of September. These instruments cost between 300 – 400,- and can be found in most music shops or easily ordered online from Amazon etc. Please buy either an AULOS or YAMAHA descant recorder. Try to avoid purchasing coloured recorders as they look pretty but do not produce a good sound. You will have the opportunity to see the progress that your child has made when they perform at the Carol Concert in December! Stationary Your child will not have an exercise book but will need a plastic envelope file to keep their worksheetsand sheet music stored in. It is vital that students bring their file and sharpened pencils to each and every lesson. Please turn over for information about piano, guitar and woodwind lessons.

2. Piano, Guitar and Woodwind (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone) Lessons In addition to one timetabled music lesson a week, piano, guitar or woodwind lessons are also available. The advantage of learning in school is that students learn on site during the school day. Communication between instrumental teachers and the classroom teacher occurs daily which enables your child to use their new skills in whole class music lessons and facilitates opportunities for students to quickly become involved in ensemble playing with other musicians. Woodwind Lessons Woodwind lessons are free for all students . It may be possible to hire and instrument from PBS. If not, you can hire or buy one from a music shop and the lessons will still be free. (There are no saxophones available to hire from PBS) Piano Lessons Students receive one 50 minute lesson a week at a cost of 300,-. Students must have a piano or keyboard at home to practise on. Guitar Lessons Individual lessons are available or it is possible to have paired or group tuition depending on the number of students who sign up. Students will need their own guitar – the teacher will advise with the purchase of a good but inexpensive beginner instrument. Individual lesson is 300,- for 50 mins Paired or group lessons will be cheaper.
