Soldier Fueling Implemented 1 Feb 2011 What? Setting a training table with focus on: • Baking instead of frying • Seeking nutrient-dense menu options • Whole Grains • Orange Juice with Calcium • Iron-Rich Sources • Replacing “kid friendly” menu items with performance oriented options: • Yogurt, Cereals, Hydration Stations • Item Placement Providing Performance Nutrition education in: • Basic Combat Training • Drill Sergeant School • Leadership Development Courses • Dining Facilities Why? To educate our Soldier Athletes and our communities, and create a greater opportunity for all to succeed. • National Youth Risk Survey of 9th-12th Graders – 2009 • 29% drank at least a can of soda per day • 23% did not participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity on any of the 30 days prior to the survey • 25% used a computer 3 or more hours/day • 33% watched TV 3 or more hours/day • 26% used tobacco at least 1 day in the 30 days prior to the survey Who? Representatives from Initial Military Training (IMT), Joint Culinary Center of Excellence (JCCoE), Medical Command (MEDCOM), Army Air force Exchange System (AAFES), and Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) form the Soldier Fueling Tiger Team.
UGR-A™ Short Order Test Update • Initiated a six-month concept test at Forts Carson and Stewart, 1 FEB 2011, with additions of Forts Bragg and Irwin, beginning 1 JUN 2011 • Data collection will assess composition of module selection, Cook friendliness, Soldier acceptance and Contract assembly • Results/Recommendations will be presented to the UGR-A™ Integrated Product Team (IPT) – AUG 2011 • Approved Short Order menus will transition to UGR-A™ menu cycle FY12 • Expect an expansion of full Short Order Menus and Reduction in Mainline Menus • Short Order menu changes/improvements will be conducted by Natick under the Fielded Group Ration Improvement Program • Next scheduled testing Aug/Sept 12
