High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) historyTask force chaired by Francesco Ruggiero in 2001 Plot J. Strait Radiation damage limit ~700 fb-1 Plan luminosity upgrade by 2014. New low-b quads with high gradient and larger aperture based on Nb3Sn SC require 9-10 years for short model R&D and component development, prototyping, and final production. Slidefrom F. Ruggiero , 2004 CERN task force on LHC machine upgrade -> LHC PR 626+666 Luminosity: Lnom=1034 -> 1035, Energy: Ecm=14 TeV -> 25 TeV SC magnet R&D for lumi upgrade also useful for energy upgrade: can be integrated with LHC magnet consolidation. Beam dynamics R&D for LHC commissioning also useful for LHC upgrade: needed to guide new IR design. LRossi-16Nov2011

Cycle in the HL-LHC run 20E+34 pile up heatdeposition in IR and DS other? 150 days of Physics /y of this cycle with 60% efficiencywillgive 250 fb-1 Levelling Which set of parameters weneed to reachthis goal? LRossi-16Nov2011
Tuning of the goal aftersummer Efficiency is defined as the ratio between the annual luminosity target of 250 fb-1 over the potential luminosity that can be reached with an ideal cycle run time with no stop for 150 days: trun= tlev+tdec+tturn. The turnaround time after a beam dump is taken as 5 hours, tdecay is 3 h while tlev depends on the total beam current LRossi-16Nov2011

HiLumiis the focal point of 20 years of converging International collaboration • The collaboration wiht US and JP on LHC upgrade startedduring the construction of LHC • EU programs have been instrumental in federating all EU efforts • WithHi-Lumi the coordination makes a stepfurther: fromcoordinated R&D to a commonproject • CERN is not anymore the unique owner, ratheris the motor and cathalizer of a wider effort. • Managedlike a large detector collaboration (with CERN in special position as operator of LHC) LRossi-16Nov2011

Is itsodifficult? Beamrelated issues… • Beam of > 1 A @ 7TeV (700 Mjoules!!) • Most probablyneed of 25 ns (e-clouds and lessbrightnessformInj): qaultiy of collision vs quantity • Verychallanging AP issues… • Needs of novelopticsschemes (S. Fartouk) 15 cm or lower LRossi-16Nov2011
