Pollution in the Rappahannock River: A Problem That Affects All of Us Kalani Pannasch-Heineman
Lack of Education • Improper disposal of waste • Point pollutions- urine • Spray paint toxins
Pollution • Trash • Runoff from fertilizers that contain nitrate and phosphate • Guts from the kills of hunters • Damage to vegetation by people on ATV’s
Fracking Threats • King George has been very proactive in their drive to limit river pollution • Restrictions have been set for Fracking on public land but not private land
Surrounding Communities Pollution Awareness • Friends of the Rappahannock is one group that works to protect and preserve the watershed. • Members take action in their own backyards and communities to protect it.
So What Can We Do? • Educate and spread awareness • Policy enforcement • Community engagement • Create educational programs • Consistent cleanup • Create social media pages • Get UMW involved!
Educating and Spreading Awareness Pros/Cons Pros: • Interaction with community • Increased awareness of the dangers and the threat of pollution • Makes it more of a local issue and not a police one Cons: • Some of the public won’t have interest or care • It is not a quick process and requires time • Certified and knowledgeable individuals required to educate on this issue
Policy Enforcement • Formation of community assemblies • Create laws for farms to limit runoff • Responsibility of citizens to not damage river
Policy Enforcement • Participation of community in two annual cleanups. • Those living within 1,000 feet of the river can only use non-toxic fertilizer. • Corn Gluten for Natural Weed Control
Policy Enforcement Pro/Cons Pros: • Improved water quality • Cleaner environment and a healthier ecosystem • A more empathetic view towards the river Cons: • Lack of initial support from majority of community • Extensive organizing and planning needed from implementation of the new policies • Funding will need to be acquired
Community Actions • More policing of the Rappahannock River • Planting more trees to collect the runoff • Install a rain garden in backyards
Community Actions • Replace the pipes in the Fredericksburg Area • Install a pollutant netting trash trap • Put seabins into the river
Community Action Pros & Cons Pros: 1. Reduce runoff 2. Brings the community together 3. Improves the city as a whole Cons: 1. Timely 2. Costly 3. Labor intensive
Visioning What would our community look like if we came together to address this wicked problem?
Where do We Go From Here? What can you do? • Throw away your trash and pick up trash when you see it • Reach out to representatives • Volunteer • Stay educated • Install a rain garden • Use environmentally friendly fertilizers
Conclusion Guys, listen…. Just don’t pollute. Please.
