  1. Background • Enrolment in Science at the U of A is defying historical trends. • Enrolment is managed closely to a specific target determined by program funding. • Our government is looking to increase “access”.

  2. Background • Student success remains a significant issue. • 9% of students in a typical entry cohort are RTW, 12% withdraw voluntarily (with a broad array of GPAs). • RTWs can be appealed, but students who take a break show better success in achieving satisfactory academic standing

  3. Background • Science is a major point of entry into the Alberta PSE system. • 35% of students in a typical entry cohort transfer out of Science to other Faculties. • In contrast to RTW and voluntary withdrawls, 38% of transfers occur at the end of year and another 38% after year 2.

  4. Background • The first year is where all the “retention-related” action is! • Graduation rates; 44% of a typical entry cohort will graduate in Science, 79% will obtain a U of A degree. • Satisfactory academic standing is defined as a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
