  2. Is this correct? • Papyrus was designed by Chris Costello to look like the typeface that might have existed if English language text were written on papyrus 2000 years ago. Papyrus has a number of distinctive human touches, including rough edges, irregular curves, and high horizontal strokes in the capitals, which support the look Costello was going for. Costello took six months to hand draw the face by means of calligraphy pen and textured paper. The font was created in 1982 and released in 1983 to the type foundry Letraset. Papyrus “merges the elegance of a traditional roman letterform with the hand-crafted look of highly skilled calligraphy”. So, while managing a handwritten look the face still has the straight up-and-down appearance of a roman typeface instead of the slanted style many scripts are in. This gives it a direction similar to a sans serif or serif typeface and can be used similarly. Papyrus ins included in many Microsoft operating systems and has been included in Macs since 2003. This ready availability probably accounts for the overuse that graphic designers and even Costello himself have discussed. A hotly debated recent use of Papyrus is not only the title face of Avatar, but also the captioning throughout the movie. Due to the visual complexity and handwritten style of the face it has low readability, which means it is not a good choice for captioning.
