  1. Comparative & Superlative One-Syllable Modifiers Add –er to the comparative and –est to the superlative.

  2. Two-Syllable Modifiers Some two-syllable words use –er & -estwhile others need more and most. When you add an ending, change “y” to “i” Words that end in –ly will take more or most, but most two syllable words you can take the one that makes more sense.

  3. Modifiers with 3 or more syllables Adjectives and adverbs with 3 or more syllables use more and most.

  4. Irregular Modifiers • Some irregular modifiers do not use –er,-est, more, or most. They are formed as follows:

  5. Remember! • **You canNEVERuse both endings, such as more AND –er or most AND –est. It will always be one or the other. • For example, you wouldn’t say “The dress is more prettier than that one.” You would just use the comparative “prettier”.
