Routes to the Westpage 6 • The Oregon Trail and Santa Fe Trail each began at Independence. • The first states formed west of the Mississippi River were Louisiana, Missouri, and Arkansas. • During the 1820’s Stephen Austin led American settlers into Texas. • Before becoming a state, Texas was called the Lone Star Republic.
5. The first wagon trains began traveling to Oregon and California in the 1840’s. • American traders took manufactured goods into Mexican territory over the Santa Fe Trail, and returned with gold, silver, and furs. • Fur trappers called mountain men roamed the Rocky Mountain Region.
