Biology SAT Prep Sections 35.2. 35.4
Fixed Actions • Innate Behavior: Behaviors virtually preformed the same way by all individuals in a species. • Lorenz and Tinbergen were some of the first to recognize this. • FAPS (Fixed Action Plans)- Unchangeable behavior sequences. • Start to finish, if interrupted must start over. Eg) reciting a poem
*If pattern is broken goose will continue without egg, or with foreign object
Stimuli's and FAPS • Stimuli- A thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue • Stimuli triggering FAPS are Sign Stimuli. • In our example the presence (or lack of) of the egg. • FAPS maximize fitness of an species so much that other behaviors could be lost in a gene pool due to NS • Ex) If an offspring does not have the behavior is could die if not preformed right • Innate behaviors are under strong genetic control
Learning • Modification of a previous behavior: Learning • Learning could be a simple behavior change to a complex one • Depends on the stimuli and how much of it there is • Habituation: Animal learns not to respond to a repeated stimulation that conveys little information. • Ex) Animals that retract to touch learn not to after multiple contacts • Habituation allows for animals to focus on other important things
