SAT Math Part 3 • A linear graph is the visual representation of a set of points that have a common slope and are connected by a single line. • Slope is defined as rise over run, or the change in Y over the change in X. • The Slope Formula is , where the values are taken from sets of coordinate pairs common to the line. • An intercept is the point on an axis through which the line passes. The y-intercept is the point where a linear graph crosses the y-axis, and the x-intercept is the point where a linear graph crosses the x-axis.
SAT Math Part 3 • A linear function can be graphed most easily by using slope-intercept form, or form. M is the slope of the line and B is the y-intercept. • Starting from the y-intercept, a line can be plotted using the slope. • Parallel lines have the same slope. • Perpendicular lines have negative reciprocal slopes. • The Midpoint of a line segment is the exact middle of the line connecting two points. SAT Math Part 3 • A Quadratic Function is a function where X is raised to a power of 2. It graphs as a parabola, which is not a line. A parabola is a curve that starts at the vertex and goes on towards infinity in a given direction. • A Quadratic Function is written in Standard Form, or , and can also be written in Vertex Form, or where the vertex is located at . • If the number at the front of the quadratic function is positive, the parabola opens up. If that number is negative, the parabola opens down. • FOIL means “First, Outer, Inner, Last” and is the process by which you distribute each term in a parentheses to each term in another parentheses.
