  3. How it affected Winnipeg It affected Winnipeg because so many people wouldn’t go to work and they were getting only 25 cents an hour. They had work 4 hours to buy one loaf of bread.

  4. Location • Do you know where the Winnipeg general strike happened? • WINNIPEG • That is why its called the Winnipeg general strike. • It started at the corner of Portage and Main with just a few unions involved. Then it quickly spread throughout the entire city.

How it started • The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 was the largest strike On May 1, 1919, workers in the building and metal trade unions went on strike after employers refused to negotiate with or formally recognize their Trades Council. Facts • The Strike was one of the biggest strikes ever taking place in Canada. • This strike affected the Winnipeg city for several days effectively paralyzing the city. • Many of the events that took place during this time had nationwide repercussions. • Four six weeks in the summer of 1919 are city of Winnipeg Manitoba was crippled by a massive and dramatic general strike. • The General strike started at March 1919. • The eight strike leader got arrested on June 17

Facts Again • At 11:00 a.m. on Thursday May 15 1919, the entire working populating was on strike. • On May 13 the city council gathered again to review the proposed agreement issued by the strikers. • On may 24 an estimated total of 6,800 strikers from thirteen traders had joined the strike. • At 11:00 a.m. on June 26, 1919,the Central Strike Committee officially called off the strike and strikers returned to work.

  8. And one More Time Facts • May 30 the police were asked to sign a contract to prevent them from joining unions. • They refused but declared that they would continue to maintain law and order. • A few days later the entire police force was fired.

  11. Bloody Saturday • Bloody Saturday was the day that the RCMP intervened and attacked all strike supporters • 2 strikers were killed also 30 were wounded and a ton were arrested.

  12. Summary • This strike affected Winnipeg for several days • It shut down the entire city during the summer of 1919 • Nothing was happening, no businesses were open because all the employees were on strike • This was the largest strike in the history of Canada

  13. How many people were killed • The only time that someone got killed in the Winnipeg general strike was on bloody Saturday 2 people got killed by the RCMP for being strike supporters.

  14. How it ended • The general strike ended on June 26 at 11 o’clock. • At 11:00 a.m. on June 26, 1919,the Central Strike Committee officially the strike and strikers returned to work.

  15. Was it worth it! • The strike was worth it because it disrupted business so much that the managers gave in after the strike and the employees finally got what they wanted the whole time . To be treated fairly and get a raise.
