Technology • Society’s culture consists of not only physical objects but also the rules for using those objects • Name some basic examples of technology in our world • What about in Harry Potter’s world?
Symbols • A symbol has a shared meaning attached to it • Words, gestures, images, sounds, etc
Language • Organization of written or spoken symbols • English principal language in the USA, but not everyone speaks it
Harry Potter Language • Muggle • Horcrux • Pensieve • Parseltongue
Values • Shared beliefs about what is good or bad, right or wrong
Subculture • Not all groups in society share the same values, norms, and behaviors • Subcultures can form • Chinatown; Little Havana
CounterCultures • Groups who reject the major values, norms, and practices of the larger society • Examples are the Mafia, religious cults, KKK
Culture Shock • Challenges when moving from one culture to another • Have you experienced culture shock?
