Time management Prioritizing and Managing distractions
Priorities • Prioritize: To arrange or put in order of importance • - Doing the most important things first • It’s easiest to make priorities based on 1 area of life at a time. Make separate lists for separate areas. • EX: School, Personal life, Chores, etc
Priorities: Importance • After picking an area, list tasks randomly. • On the list, decide if the importance is High, Medium, or Low. • School assignments that should be high are things that are due the next day or things that are worth a big percent of your grade. Also include studying for tests. The closer you get to the test date, the higher of importance it is to study.
Prioritize: Urgency • How URGENT is the task? • The task that is the most important and most urgent should be completed first.
Priorities: Effort • Decide how much time each task is going to take. • Make a list putting things in order. The things with the most urgency and importance should go at the top, perhaps making the things with the least effort and most urgency and importance first. • Alternate lists: this will help you to get everything done in all areas of life, and to complete tasks by the due date.
Postpone Unnecessary Tasks • Don’t get off task after making your list. Make sure to get the most important tasks done first. Do unnecessary tasks last: for example, things that don’t have a due date/not school related can be completed after all other tasks are complete. • With your list: cross off tasks as you complete them.
Balance is Key • Take breaks after working on one task for 30 minutes. This will help improve your concentration. • Save time for the unexpected. • Things that are worth more should be completed first. • Consider breaking up long tasks into shorter tasks. • Have realistic expectations. • Give yourself time to rest. • Ask for help.
Make a list of your priorities • Maybe you need to make a list for today and a list for the week. Do whatever works for you.
Managing Distractions • What are some things that distract us from getting our work done?
How to Manage distractions • Schedule breaks. • Don’t wait until the last minute • Make a schedule, and follow it. • The break should restore. Don’t think about the work during your break. Take care of distractions during your break so that it’s not there when you are trying to get work done.
How to manage distractions • Plan for distractions • Acknowledge the interruption- sometimes things happen you can’t control. Add some time just incase something arises. It’s better to have planned more time and no distractions happen than not enough time and something come up. • Bookmark your idea. If something does come up, have a way to help you remember where you left off. Maybe write it down on a sticky note. This way, you know where to start after the distraction is out of the way. • Minimize immediate involvement. If a distraction does come up, see if you can address the distraction after your work is complete.
How to manage distractions • Control socializing. • TURN OFF YOUR PHONE. This is a distraction that is easy to take up your time. Check your phone during breaks, not while you are trying to work. • Stay off social media. If you’re on the internet, stay off Facebook, Twitter, etc. Only use these sites during breaks. They can take up a lot of time and prevent you from getting all your work done.
How to manage distractions • Know yourself. • When are you most productive? Late at night? Early in the morning? Right after school? Get most of your work done at those times. Make sure you get enough rest before/after your most productive times. Different people work better at different times of the day. • When are you most productive? When do you think best?
How to manage distractions • Give yourself enough time. • Don’t wait until last minute. Rushed work is not your best work. • Study regularly. Don’t cram, Research proves you won’t remember as much as you would if you studied just a little bit each day.
Use free time wisely • Make flash cards: study on the go. • Read over your notes: get to class a few minutes early? Review notes from yesterday to help you have a better understanding for today. • Double check your work. • Rest. • Play- get the stress away • Make time for yourself. • Do something that makes you happy • Work on Charger Challenge - Volunteer! • Seek out help!
