PAN-EUROPEAN STUDY CONCERNING THE ENDOCRINE SERVICE IN EUROPE AND FUTURE ASPECTS: THE SECOND UEMS STUDY
AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this study is to gain more information regarding the legal status of the specialty in different European countries, as well as the working conditions and possibilities of finding a job at different health providers including university posts. Moreover, to investigate if a European diploma in Endocrinology may be helpful, especially for young endocrinologists, in finding a new job or promoting their careers.
METHODS OF THE STUDY Appropriate questionnaire will be distributed to at least 2 individuals from each country, which participate at the UEMS-section of Endocrinology. Individuals may be national representatives at the section or active fellows from each country, who would like to participate in the study. It is the responsibility of the leaders of this study to find such colleagues and ask them for participation.
QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED 1. Is Endocrinology a main specialty in your country? 2. Years and type of post-graduate training. 3. Exams after training. Do you personally believe that the whole curriculum should be changed? 4. Paediatric Endocrinology. Please provide details regarding the curriculum and the service which exist in your country.
5. Out-patient clinics. Does Endocrinology exist as a main endocrinology outpatient clinic or the service is provided under the umbrella of other specialties like Internal medicine, Gynaecology, Urology etc. 6. Please provide details regarding the DM status of service in your country. We all know that there is a permanent confrontation regarding Endocrinologists and colleagues who are providing diabetes service and who are not Endocrinologists.
7. Please provide appropriate information regarding lipids, andrology and reproductive endocrinology. Are those clinics independent, part of Endocrinology or under the service of other specialties like for example cardiology, urology or gynaecology? It is important to give all the relevant information in order to reach reliable conclusions. 8. What options exist to find a permanent job after completion of the specialty and become endocrinologist? Also, does the part-time job or temporary appointments for a given time exist in your country? a) University appointment b) State hospital appointment c) Private practice d) Family doctor (GP) e) Others
9. Could you please provide estimated figures regarding the percentage of Endocrinologists from the whole number of existing colleagues, which are working under an official status at different levels, i.e. University hospitals, state hospitals etc. at your country? In Greece for example, there is no more than 10% who are working under the umbrella of University or Hospital appointments. The rest are working either at private hospitals as a part-time workers or in the private practice.
10. Do you think that the DIPLOMA OF ENDOCRINOLOGY AND DIABETES is a useful tool for the majority of endocrinologists, which will facilitate their career and improve the knowledge of the different aspects of the specialty?
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS All the responses will be analyzed by statistical experts and the results will be presented in the best scientific way, under general and specific groups and subgroups.
DISCUSSION All the results will be presented and discussed appropriately point by point. Specific results with special interest for our specialty will be elucidated and discussed in details. Appropriate changes and suggestions on the basis of these results will be indicated and formulated in clear messages, which must be applied to improve the training and the living conditions, especially of the young endocrinologists.
PUBLICATION A publication in a prestigious European journal, like European Journal of Endocrinology, is the target of this nice piece of research.
AUTHORSHIP All colleagues who will participate in the study will be co-authors. International standards will be followed regarding the order of the authors.
1. Data which already exist and which have been collected in the best way by our colleague Hans Perrild from Denmark will be included in this study. 2. Financial support to cover the secretariat and the statistical expenses of this research will be asked from the UEMS – Section of Endocrinology. Prof. G.E.
