BACKGROUND: • The Web Media Collective, why we joined and how this collaboration supports our • sustainable needs? How will we plan for the future? Remain viable and have the ability • to show return on our investment. • Content wasn’t an issue, how to migrate the existing data from our 4D database into • an on-line system was though. • We had been providing student review sites made with Image AXS pro, hosted on an • unreliable, OSU server. • Budgeting. What could we afford in terms of a database? Make v. Buy approach • Workflow--managing an analog collection and digital library all at the same time. How has • this changed our workflow and process? Circulation, where we made adjustments? • staffing needs, adjusting to managing both collections full-time.
Principles of Sustainability Sustainable: to keep in existence, to maintain, to supply with necessities or nourishment, to provide for, to support from below, to keep from falling or sinking
Principles of Sustainability • You know why your collection exists and where it is going. • Your operation is productive and you can demonstrate return • on investment. Know your collection
Principles of Sustainability • Your champion knows why your collection exists, whom • it serves, where it is going, and how it benefits the organization Find your “champion.”
Principles of Sustainability • You have the resources available to get the right content to • to the right people in the right format at the right time. • Budget Identify Resources

Principles of Sustainability • Your services exist independent of specific individuals, specific • equipment, specific software, etc. If one component is • “interrupted,” the entire operation will not collapse. Don’t put all your eggs in one Basket
How do we know we’ve been Successful? • Lean and Productive • Made decisions on practical realities and not “ideal” models • Faculty response
Testimonial “ “The OSU VRL database is a multifunctional user friendly tool designed to allow anyone interested in teaching from digital images to master the technique quickly. From it one can access multiple image sources and easily incorporate one’s own collection, thus allowing maximum flexibility. Materials are quickly downloadable to presentation software in full resolution with identifying labels. I began to teach digitally during the current academic year, and from the very first class I felt comfortable with this radically new and different manner of teaching.” Mark Fullerton, Professor and Chair History of Art
Principles of Sustainability • There is strength and sustainability in numbers. Work towards • common goals and common metadata standards. Trust your • collaborators and let go of certain areas of control. Request • funding collectively. Collaborate for Sustainability
