The Papal Monarchy • Lay Investiture • When individuals became a church official they were given a ring and a staff • Pope Gregory VII • Was convinced he had been chosen by God to reform the church • Claimed that the pope was God’s vicar on earth and his authority extended over all the Christian world
The Papal Monarchy • The Church Supreme • Pope Innocent III • Interdict – forbids priests from giving the sacraments (Christian rites) to a particular group of people • Example: Philip Augustus of France had to take back his wife in order to have the sacraments
New Religious Orders • A New Activism • Cistercian Order • Unhappy with a lack of discipline at the monastery • Cistercians were very strict • Simple diet and only had a single robe • All decorations were eliminated everywhere • Took the religion to people outside of the monastery • Women in Religious Orders • Most nuns were from aristocratic families • Convenient for women who were unable or unwilling to find husbands
New Religious Orders • Franciscans • Francis of Assisi was captured and imprisoned during a local war • Abandoned all worldly and material goods in order to preach and live in poverty • Attracted a new band of followers who took a vow of absolute poverty and would only live by working and begging for their food
New Religious Orders • The Inquisition • Created to deal with heretics • People who confessed to heresy performed public penance and received punishment • 1252 – Inquisition decided to make things exciting by adding torture • To 13th Century Christians using force to save souls from damnation was the right thing to do
Religion in the High Middle Ages • The Church was a crucial part of people’s lives from birth to death • Baptism, marriage, communion • Only the clergy could administer these rites people constantly depended on them • Saints were very important to the Christian Church • Virgin Mary, St. Nicholas • Medieval Christians believed in a pilgrimage to the Holy City of Jerusalem
