TROPICAL STORM SANDY • TROPICAL STORM SANDY : its rain-laden trails and strong winds wreaked heavy damage in the country • Affected population : most damages in Sud, Grande-Anse, Nippes and Ouest departments. • Casualties : 54 confirmed deaths – 20 injured – 21 missing • 1.8 million people affected : 21,107 evacuated to158 evacuation shelters – more than 18,000 homes flooded • OCHA : 1,2 million people in food insecurity after hurricane passages • OCHA : 90 camps have been damaged 5768families affected (OCHA) / 1,500 people remained in 15 shelters • $23.7 million are required for needs of 650,000 people among the most vulnerable

Recommendations • Due to the recent increased criminal and gang activities within the Yellow zone during daylight hours which can impact UN personnel operating within it, mitigating measures put in place in the Yellow Zone should be maintained and reinforced. • Security awareness of UN Personnel in relation to movement restrictions in Yellow zone and changes in security situation to be enhanced.

  8. Recommendations • UN personnel transiting Yellow zone should use main roads recommended by Security and avoid the following points of concern: • Toussaint Louverture, between Rue Salomon Lysius and Rue Magnolia (former red planet). • Route National # 1, between Rue Av. Soleil (water tower) and Rue Magnolia.

  9. Recommendations • Rue Delmas between Delmas 18 and Delmas 2 due to the recent clashes between Delmas 2 and Bel Air gangs. • UN personnel should ensure that the doors and windows of their vehicles are locked at all times. They should avoid leaving valuables inside unattended vehicles.
