  1. OVERVIEW by Mark Richardson AIM OF THE UWN/CCLL SUMMER SCHOOL

  2. GWENT PARENTS GET LEARNING BUG AFTER TASTE OF UNIVERSITY LIFE “I’ve got the learning bug and am now signing up to do a degree,”

  3. BARRIERS AND PERCEPTIONS • Anxiety about what university means • Ability as students or learners • University is for someone else—not us • What about the kids/family?

  4. AS A RESULT OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL I FEEL… • Ready willing and able to complete my education • More confident about going to Uni and more focussed. I can do this and I will do this • I am less scared of being a student in the University • Enlightened especially having the chance to compare views with other people • Elated!! Confident enough to move onto the next step

  5. AS A RESULT OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL I WILL… • Now be coming to Uni • Be enrolling for University • I will continue HE • Definitely be looking into university as an option • I will be going on campus next September to study more. Got the study bug

  6. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK FOR ME WAS… • Having the opportunity to come and have first hand experience of university life, without having to worry about childcare for my son as I was able to bring him along • Seeing students walking around campus attending classes • Ethics lecture • Making more friends and having debates • The opportunity to debate and ask questions after lectures – interaction

  7. EDUCATION OR ENTERTAINMENT?

  8. BOTH • “We found it daunting to start with—living and studying on campus. Once we’d settled in we all loved it,” AND THAT “Our kids were kept entertained with a range of activities such as circus skills and face-painting - leaving us free to enjoy studying a range of modules. I think the summer school has helped us all realise that education is for everybody.”

  9. A BUTLIN’S FOR FAMILY LEARNING • Accommodation • Crèche for under fives • Activities for school children • H.E level lectures and assessment

  10. IMPACT? • 'I had a fantastic time and feel this is a brilliant way to encourage people to university a bit like try before you buy and will be looking forward to seeing it take off for the next generation like my daughter, as my attendance here was as much for me as it was to encourage her.‘ ANONOMOUS FEEDBACK

  11. DEBUNKING MYTHS • 'I thought it was an excellent way of debunking the myths about university life with tangible outcomes for both parties. Please repeat.‘ ANONOMOUS FEEDBACK

  12. PROJECTS SUCH AS THESE CAN; • Validate community experience of H.E • Challenge the myth that H.E is elitist • Encourage family engagement to pursue other avenues for learning • Provide the pre-requisite experience to continue in H.E provision—which aids retention • Bridge any disparities of experiences between community and institution.
