Plot • This book takes place in Ithaca atOdysseus’ house. • Penelope went to the storage room to retrieve Odysseus’ bow. • Penelope told the suitors whomever could successfully string and shoot the bow she would marry. • Telemakhos attempted to string and shoot his father’s bow. • All the suitors except Antinoos and Eurymakhos also attempted to shoot the bow, many of them were anxious to try and embarrassed and angry when they failed. • Odysseus revealed himself to two suitors, Eumaios and Philoetius, outside. He revealed himself because he needed their help to carry out his plan of getting rid of the suitors.

  4. Plot continued… • Back inside Eurymakhostries to string and shoot the bow. He fails and Antinoos suggests praying to Apollo and trying again tomorrow. • Odysseus, still disguised as an old man, goes back inside and asks to try to string and shoot the bow. • Antinoos, Eurymakhos, and most of the other suitors say no, worried he will be successful and embarrass them. • Telemakhostells them it is his house and to let him try. • Odysseus successfully strings and shoots the bow and reveals himself in doing so. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuIOlYlems0

  5. Analysis • This chapter gives a certain perspective on Penelope and other women. During this time period women were kept uniformed by men for various reasons. • For example, in this chapter Odysseus makes sure that Penelope and the other women are kept out of the way and locked in a room. • Penelope does not know that Odysseus is back. He reveals his identity to everyone else first then her. • Also ones identity is also a theme through out The Odyssey. • Odysseus has to prove his identity several ways • To the two suitors, Eumaios and Philoetius, Odysseus proves his identity by showing them a scar that he got when he was younger. • To the other suitors he reveals his identity by successfully stringing and shooting the bow .

  6. Close Reading • Open your books to page 394 and read lines 115-131. • Telemakhos is speaking. Notice how he has changed from the beginning of the book. He has discovered his identity and became more confident with his authority. He tells the suitors what to do, and makes it clear who is in charge. • Does anyone notice any further changes?

  7. Main Idea • Discuss with the person next to you what you think the overall main idea of this book is. • Overall: • Odysseus reveals his identity and is reunited with Telemakhos to take back control of his house and to rid it of the suitors.
