  1. Video Monday, September 17th 2012 AV Production 6th, 7th, & 8th Period

  2. What is video? • Historically (1920s-1960s) there were 2 main audiovisual media: • Film • Television

  3. Film • the medium used for creating most audiovisual programs • Movies • TV Commercials Photo: http://apps.bond.edu.au/bondspace/media/images/mason_hoffman/film-at-bond.jpg

  4. Benefits of Film • equipment is portable making location filming practical • ability to reproduce B&W or color is good • Picture & sound tracks are recorded on separate strips of film, allowing for sophisticated editing Photo: http://barnstable.k12.ma.us/bhs/Library/images/thumbsup_000.jpg

  5. Television • Medium used for broadcasting studio programs “live” Photo: http://www.insidesocal.com/tomhoffarth/television.jpg

  6. Negatives of TV • Equipment was heavy, complex & tied down by cables • Image quality was much lower than film • No reproduction of Color • It couldn’t be recorded later for editing Photo: http://blog.mdwoptions.com/.a/6a00e55367a353883401156f3f2245970b-800wi

  7. Popularity of TV • As the popularity for TV grew, manufacturers were able to create camcorders • TV quality was then improved • Now it is referred to as: Video

  8. Video vs. Film • Video • picture quality is course • color sometimes lacks a richness • less flexibility in sound editing • Film • much more expensive to shoot & process • less tolerant of different light levels • color balancing is time-consuming & expensive • titles & effects must be created separately • editing requires negative cutting

  9. Video Production • Preproduction • Production • Postproduction

  10. Preproduction • Everything you do BEFORE actual shooting begins • Scripting • Scouting locations • Gathering cast & crew • Planning production equipment • often longer & more complicated than the production phase Photo: http://avirtualdominica.com/piratesdominica/images/castingflyer.jpg

  11. Production • The actual shooting of the material that will eventually become your final product • Important responsibilities are shared by the: • Director • Videographer • Production Designer Photo: http://twilighters.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/31355468.jpg

  12. Postproduction • When shooting is done, you do not yet have a program, but a series of footage • You then select the shots you want to include, assemble them in order, add music & sound effects & create title & visual effects • This is also called editing Photo: http://www.cravingtech.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Adobe-Premiere-Elements-8.jpg
