  1. Language Arts Goals: Monday Warm Up: Level Sentences Vocab: Word Wheels Lesson: Cut the Driftwood from your Writing Activity: Driftwood Activity Activity: Literature Circles: Red Kayak-Create Film Strip Imagery Slides Homework: Work on your story-RD due Wednesday

  2. Sentence Leveling • Write a simple sentence with a subject and verb and adjective. The pretty cat ran. • Take out the adjective, pretty, and replace it with a description of how the cat is pretty. The fluffy, black and white cat ran. • Take the subject out and replace it with a synonym. The fluffy, black and white feline ran. • Now replace the verb, ran, in the sentence with a synonym for ran. The fluffy, black and white feline darted. • Lastly, add description to your new verb to enhance how the action occurred- what did it look like, sound like,… where did it happen …when the cat darted? The fluffy, black and white feline darted across the well lit alley into the darkness.

  4. WARM UP Create a sentence with a metaphor. Create a sentence with a simile. Create a sentence with onomatopoeia. Create a sentence with hyperbole. Create a sentence that personifies a cell phone. JOURNAL TOPIC: YOU CAN’T SHAKE A SHADOW THAT IS FOLLOWING YOU EVERYWHERE…FREE WRITE!

  5. POINT OF VIEW • FIRST PERSON • THIRD PERSON • OMNISCIENT WHO IS TELLING THE STORY

  6. FIRST PERSON • THE STORY IS BEING TOLD THROUGH THE VOICE OF ONE SPECIFIC CHARACTER. THE CHARACTER TELLING THE STORY USES THE FIRST PERSON PRONOUN “I” . WITH THIS PERSECTIVE, WE ARE SHOWN ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE STORY. EXAMPLE: MAN, I CAN’T BELIEVE TOM WOULD EVEN LOOK AT HER TWICE.

  7. THIRD PERSON • THE STORY IS BEING SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF ONE PARTICULAR CHARACTER. THE NARRATOR REVEALS ONLY ONE CHARACTER’S INNER THOUGHTS AND IS NOT A CHARACTER IN THE STORY. THE NARRATOR USES PRONOUNS LIKE HE OR SHE. EXAMPLE: I WATCHED AS SARAH OPENED HER LOCKER AND GAZE INTO HER MIRROR WONDERING IF SHE WOULD EVER LIKE A GUY LIKE ME.

  8. OMNISCIENT • THE STORY IS BEING TOLD BY AN ALL KNOWING NARRATOR WHO SUPPLIES MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ALL THE CHARACTERS AND EVENTS THAN ANY ONE CHARACTER COULD KNOW. EXAMPLE: TOM FELT HURT WHEN HIS BEST FRIEND BETRAYED HIM. HE WAS LIKELY TO GET EVEN.

  9. ACTIVITY • WE WILL READ A SHORT SCENARIO AND REWRITE IT IN THIRD PERSON. • READ THE PARAGRAPH ALOUD • NOW WRITE THE STORY FROM THE THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW. TELL THE STORY AS SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF TOM BUT IT MUST BE TOLD FROM THE VOICE OF A NARRATOR. THE NARRATOR (YOU) SHOULD TELL THE STORY THROUGH THE EYES OF TOM. USE PRONOUNS LIKE HE AND SHE, NOT I.

  13. Camera Method Focus your camera on the surfer and describe what you see from the inside out as you widen the lens. Focus your camera on the shark and describe what you see from the outside in as you widen the lens.
