  1. Project by C. D. Date: January 25, 2010 English/Language Arts A Theodore Roosevelt1858-1919

  2. Who is Theodore Roosevelt? Theodore Roosevelt, a rugged outdoorsman and conservationist at heart, was born in 1858 with asthma and a love for nature and adventure. Roosevelt was elected vice president in 1901. He became president when President William McKinley was assassinated by Leon Czolgoszin 1901. He is considered to be one of the United States’ best presidents, and even earned a place on Mt. Rushmore.

  3. I admire Theodore Roosevelt for many reasons. Like me, Roosevelt cares about animals. One of his favorite pastimes was hunting, but he did not believe in killing animals just for the sake of killing. He donated all his collections to museums. Roosevelt was also concerned with the environment. He established wildlife refuges in 17 states, including Pelican Island off the Florida coast. (background)

  4. History and Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt lived through 3 wars: Civil, Spanish-American, and World War 1. At age 3, the Civil War had begun. His family’s support was split. His mother supported the Confederates because she grew up on a southern plantation. His father, however, supported the Union. He did not go to fight because his wife’s brothers were fighting and she did not want him fighting against them. Theodore was a young adult when the Spanish-American war broke out.

  5. History and Roosevelt He left his post in D.C. to lead the Rough Riders, his cavalry team, to fight. Their most famous battle was that of San Juan Hill. Roosevelt left the White House just before World War 1 began. Roosevelt regretted leaving because he had different views on the War than President McKinley. McKinley was hesitant on declaring war, while Roosevelt thought immediately that Congress should declare war on Germany.

  6. Comparing Past and Present Roosevelt lived a very different life than we do today. He was born with asthma, which made it difficult to breathe and exercise. Today, if someone has asthma, they use an inhaler. Asthma inhalers were not invented until after Roosevelt died in 1919. Many other medicines and treatments had not been discovered yet. Also, more children were taught at home. Roosevelt’s older sister Anna taught him and his siblings how to read and do arithmetic. It was not until college that he received a formal education at Harvard University and later Columbia Law School.

  7. A Question for TR If I could ask Theodore Roosevelt one question, it would be if he wished he had never become president. Roosevelt did not run for president. When McKinley was assassinated, he, as vice president, became president. It seemed as if Roosevelt enjoyed his time as president, even though he did not want to run in the beginning. I want to know if he would have changed anything if he could.
