  1. Welcome Parents! 1st Quarter Parent Meeting September 1, 2009

What are we learning?1st Quarter Goals and Objectives • Science– Health and Nutrition • Literacy – Main idea and details, types of sentences, nouns, capitalization and punctuation rules, spelling patterns, journaling, narrative writing, AR • Math – Addition and subtraction, number sense (place value, comparing and ordering numbers), graphing and coordinate systems, multiplication (2 digits x 2 digits), problem solving • Social Studies – NC geography and map skills, early explorers, early history of NC, Current Events

  3. 4th Grade Expectations • Nightly Homework will consist of: • Must have ready first thing in the morning. Once unpacked, they can’t go back! • Math – a page in their textbook, a worksheet, or other activity • Spelling – practice activities nightly, practice quiz on Thursdays • Reading – 30 minutes each night and fill out log – quarterly projects • Occasional writing, science, or social studies • Current Events are part of homework • No Homework = Silent Lunch • Positive behavior is always expected. • Love and Logic - Students take ownership of actions, choices, consequences fit the offence • Parents contacted through agendas, email, or phone calls

  4. Homework Hints • Let your student know that you believe homework is important. • Set aside a specific time and place for homework each day. • Monitor your child when they are completing homework. • Provide guidance when needed (but let them do the work). • Provide encouragement. • Take action when homework is not done. • Take action when homework is not brought home. • Contact the teacher when questions or concerns arise.

  5. Field Trips • Heritage Theater – (tentatively) October 14-15 • Blackbeard Play – Students perform • Raleigh – Spring (April or May) • Science Museum • History Museum • Legislative Building • Capital Building • Governors Mansion (?) • ~ $16

  6. Volunteer Opportunities • Math buddies • Math flash cards • Reading buddies • Lunch buddies • Clerical duties – filing, Tuesday folders, etc • I will send out an interest inventory next week and begin a schedule.

  7. Parent/Teacher Conferences • I like to meet with all parents individually during 1st quarter. • I am available Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. • 7:15-7:35 • 1:10-1:40 • 3:00-5:00 • Please let me know of any questions or concerns you have, I will be glad to meet with you.
