  2. Personality Tests • Used to describe and measure various aspects of people’s personality • Also used to diagnose psychological problems and disorders.

Features of personality tests • Standardization: a test that is administered and scored the same way every time. • Examples are SAT, Stanford-Binet IQ test, ISATs • Reliability results must be consistent (Myer-Briggs) • Validity-is the test testing what is intended to test. (Picture test at beginning semester)

  4. Types of Personality Tests • 2 types of personality tests: objective and projective tests.

  5. Objective Tests • Standardized group of test items • In the form of a questionnaire • Ex –true or false. • 2 most common: Minnesota Mulitphasic Personality Inventory and California Psychological Inventory. • People with depression or schizophrenia will answer questions in the predictable ways.

  6. Projective Tests • Have no clearly specified answers • Open ended format • Presented with stimuli and asked to report what the stimuli represents to them. • Most famous: Rorschach Inkblot test and Thematic Apperception test

How to Interpret • Location: which part of the blot do people respond to? • Determinants: Shading, texture or color. • Highly influenced by texture and color= very emotional • Features of blot=highly intelligent • Content: what are they seeing? • Form level: answers that fit in the shape of the blot suggest we see things as most people do.

TAT • Developed in the 1930’s. • Widely used in clinical practice and motivation research. • Idea is obtain values and needs from the stories they tell and also to measure achievement motivation. • Psychologists are trained to derive attitudes and achievement scores from the stories. • Thematic Apperception Test on Vimeo

  11. Criticisms • Very subjective • Each psychologist will interpret in different ways • Rorschach is not very reliable. • TAT is more reliable because people’s needs and values emerge in the story.

  12. Activity • You will create 1 Inkblot. You only get one chance at this so follow directions carefully to get the coolest inkblot. • Everyone will receive 1 piece of paper. • Only use 1 color • Less is more. If you use too much paint, then it just becomes a blob of paint. • Do not rub the paint too much or for too long. The paint will dry and stick together. • When you are done, write your name on the lower right corner of your inkblot. This should be in the front. • Enjoy!
