  5. Engage your thinking:What can BLOOD do for you? What does your circulatory system have in common with the United Parcel Service (UPS)?

Engage your thinking:What can BLOOD do for you? • Like the UPS, your circulatory system is in the business of delivering things. • Your blood provides the service of carrying materials to and from your cells 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, 165 days a year. • The UPS carries packages…your blood carries materials such as oxygen, sugars, and waste products.

Use the website above and your books (pp.100-106) to answer the following: 1. What does the blood carry to the cells? 2. What does the blood carry away from the cells? 3. Where does loop one carry blood? 4. Where does loop two carry blood?

Check Point …Levels of organization for the circulatory system • The main function of the circulatory system is to transport materials to and from the cells in your body. • The circulatory system is made up of organs such as the heart and blood vessels (also your blood!). • These organs are made up of cardiac muscle tissue (heart), smooth muscle tissue (vessels) and connective tissue (blood). • This tissue is made up of specialized cells that have different jobs (animal cells).
