Collaborative researchin the Health theme Main policy drivers: • Improving health of European citizens • Increasing competitiveness of health-related industries and businesses • Addressing global health issues, including emerging epidemics Budget: €6.1 billion over 7 years (2007-2013)
Collaborative research across borders and other barriers • betweencountries: • multinational consortia, with at least 3 partners from 27 EU Member States (MS) + 12 Associated Countries (AC)i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, FYROM, Iceland, Israel, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey. • researchers from any country in the world can participate, from industrialised countries and from developing countries. • betweendifferent types oforganizationsPublic sector, private sector & civil society: universities, research centres, industry (including SMEs), patient organisations, other stakeholders… • betweendisciplines: multidisciplinary, translational R&D
The Health ThemeThree main activities (“pillars”) Activity 1: Biotechnology, generic tools & technologies for health Activity 2: Translating research for human health Activity 3: Optimising the delivery of health care The Innovative Medicines Initiative cross-cutting issues:international cooperation, SMEs, child health, ageing populations, gender-related health issues Activity 4:Support actions & response to policy needs
Scope of researchin the Health Theme • Funding can support both basic and applied research including discovery activities, translational research and early clinical trials. Normally phase I and II clinical trials, in some exceptional cases, phase III can included.
Outcome of first calls (2007-2008-2009): 433 projects selected, €1.84 billion awarded plus IMI: 15 projects, €110 million awarded

Strategy for Health theme in next calls (2011-2012-2013) • Increased focus on fewer areas • to increase critical mass, impact and visibility • therefore, more areas closed in each call • Main thematic priorities for WP 2011: - the brain (neurodegenerative diseases; lifestyle-related aspects); diabetes/obesity & lifestyle-induced conditions; antimicrobial resistance; heath inequalities… • Cross-cutting priorities: SMEs,clinical trials • International cooperation continues to be a policy priority
