History • It involved from hymns, work songs, and field hollers to show the work that was involved and the spiritual side of things. • Blues music was originated in New Orleans in the 19th century. • In the 1920s the music of jazz began to migrate to a big band format combining elements of ragtime, black spirituals, blues, and European music.
History Cont.. • Blues is the foundation of jazz as well as the prime source of rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll, and country music. • Blues music is often played with a saxophone in it as the style is quite jazzy, however the 3 main instruments are said to be the guitar, the banjo and the harmonica. • The Blues music as a major influence over the music today.
More History • Duke Ellington, Ben Pollack, Don Redman, and Fletcher Henderson sported some of the more popular early big bands playing hot music. • These bands contained burgeoning jazz stars and future big bandleaders like Coleman Hawkins, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Red Allen, and John Kirby. One of the greatest players was Jelly Roll Morton he was the first great composer and piano player of jazz.
