  6. 15th District PTA Louisville, KY Goals of the project • To educate parents and the community about CCSS • Increase public awareness and support of the CCSS • Increase parent participation in PTA • Increase diversity in PTA

  7. 15th District PTA Louisville, KY Anticipated Challenges • How to reach non-PTA parents and/or uninvolved parents • How to ensure we had consistent messaging about CCSS • How to reach enough people to ensure the message was effective • Language barriers

  8. 15th District PTA Louisville, KY • Workshops at 36 Schools • Workshops for 42 Community groups • Reached over 10,000 parents/community (face to face contact) thru trainings and educational events • Through social media, newsletters, Parent Connection, GE Foundation newsletter, over 900,000 people know about the common core • 3,000 NEW e-mail addresses have been acquired to continue educating about KCAS

Assessment & Accountability National PTA is creating Assessment Guides for each CCSS State. • CCSS overview and what are standards • Why new assessments, why are these better, benefits of better tests • PARCC and SBAC info (very little – we didn’t want the focus to be on the consortia, we wanted to show state ownership)

Assessment & Accountability • Definitions of tests being created (interim, summative, formative, etc) • Sample test questions at the elementary, middle and high school levels • State-specific accountability systems at the student, teacher and school levels • What parents can expect • How parents can support their child

Assessment & Accountability • Working with each DOE to collect and verify state-specific information • The first two states (New York and Oregon) should be ready in the next few weeks • We are also trying to keep up with the rapidly changing environment around assessments – the new flexibility allowances, states shifting consortia, etc.
