  2. Learning to Lead through Sport Leadership is like beauty. It is difficult to describe, but we know it when we experience it. ‘Universities, particularly in North America, are beginning to invest heavily in the provision of leadership development opportunities for students in the form of extra-curricular activities-------’ Jackson and Parry 2009

  8. Learning to Lead through Sport Leadership in Sport and Business In business, good leaders are considered to be – positive, committed to high level performance, self-confident, genuine, open to new ideas They are seen to – lead by example, set the standards they want others to observe, delegate effectively, praise and show they value people, understand goal-setting (process/product, short-term/long/term)

  9. Learning to Lead through Sport Every one of you in this room is a leader, and you all, almost certainly, assume the role willingly. What ‘leadership’ roles have you ever fulfilled in and out of sport? See if you can think of 6, with three of each. Think outside the box! Discuss two of these with your neighbour- one in sport and one outside

  10. Learning to Lead through Sport Consider any leadership role that you have held within sport, preferably one you hold now- eg Club captain, A U Chair etc) In what way might you have performed this leadership role better (ie more effectively and successfully)?

  11. Learning to Lead through Sport Is this a typical situation with AU’s and University sports clubs? -A popular ‘charismatic’ person is elected as Chair or Captain? -Others are elected to the committee, based on popularity and willingness to ‘serve’, not necessarily because of suitability for the particular position. -During the ensuing year, a number of these people do not do their ‘job’ well. -They are allowed to continue, with the Chair or captain doing much more than he/she should. -The next year, it all happens again!!! This is an inefficient structure

  12. Learning to Lead through Sport Leader role in changing things for the better -Understand leadership! -Use ‘distributed’ leadership model -Get everyone ‘on board’ by using collaborative goal-setting -Do not ‘duck’ making decisions

  13. Learning to Lead through Sport The leadership qualities that can be nurtured and developed at University can- Improve employability Improve University sport A double whammy!!
