In the law of Moses the book of Deuteronomy states, “the poor will always be with you.” • God looked out for the poor and wants us to do the same. • Jesus invites us to recognize him in the poor. • “When you do it to the least of these, you do it to me.” • What can you do to help the poor?
God’s Law guides the Israelites as they become a nation. • Following God’s laws brings life and protection to everyone, including those who are poor. • What contributes to poverty in this country and in the world?
The Israelites become a great nation! With power and wealth comes… What are some temptations that cause a teen to stray from God? Are the consequences worth it? • Temptation to stray from being faithful to God.

God Reassures His People…role of the prophets. Prophets of the Old Testament… A prophet is someone chose by God to speak for Him. “In Israel, many biblical prophets were strong critics of the kings and of the people, at times placing their lives in peril (danger) for doing so.” • Worked for the one, true God, and God worked through them.
The prophet Amos warned of God’s judgment on Israel…See p. 145 Through the prophets… “God never turns us away.” Can you think of any modern day prophets that help you or young people change for the better? • The people repent and turn back to God and try to change their sinful ways.
The mission of the prophets included: • Challenging people to live by the covenant and stop behaving in ways that broke the law. • Teaching the faith. • Advocating for just treatment of those who were poor or suffering. • Preaching radical redemption and conversion of heart. • Interceding on behalf of the People when speaking to the Lord.
The Hebrew prophets proclaimed the coming of a Messiah… • They pointed to a future hope that reached its fulfillment in Jesus—one who was much more than a prophet…the son of God. • In the book of the Prophet Isaiah Christian’s link the images contained there as a foretelling of coming Messiah– Jesus.
