Even though each student receives the same basic services, Walkerville Public Schools is able to offer much more through other State and Federal Programs. Each student’s cake is decorated differently, depending on individual needs and programs he or she qualifies for.
What are the extra toppings? • In Elementary and Middle School the “frosting on the cake” comes from Schoolwide Title I services. • Title I provides additional funding in order provide services to meet the needs of students. • One determining factor for a school to qualify for Schoolwide Title I services is a very high free and reduced lunch rate.
What makes the Schoolwide Title I frosting? • PM session of Kindergarten • First and Second Grade Early Intervention Reading Groups • RtI (Response to Intervention) • Para-Professionals • Teacher support
What kind of frosting do High School Students have on their cake? • All students, K-12, can qualify as “At-Risk” • These factors include low standardized test scores, below grade level achievement in core academic areas, homelessness, and various family history factors

What other “toppings” do we offer to all students who qualify? • Homeless Services • English Language Learner Services • Migrant Services • 21st Century Program Services (Project FOCUS and PACE
Title X, Part C (of the No Child Left Behind Act) • All parents complete a Residency Questionnaire upon registration • If “Section A” is marked indicating that the student lives: In a shelter With one or more family in a house or apartment because of economic hardship In a motel, car or campsite In a home of someone other than a parent or legal guardian Then that family may be considered “Homeless” • Homeless Services are intended to enable the student to continue within their original school district and fully participate in school activities. • Transportation is one of the most common services, along with school supplies. (The school receives no additional funding for these services)
English Language Learner Services(Title III) • All Families complete a Home Language Survey upon enrollment • If the student’s home language is a language other than English, that student may qualify for Title III Services • The student is then given an English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA), which is mandated by the state, to determine if the student qualifies for services • All students language acquisition needs are first addressed by the classroom teachers • Walkerville’s staff has been trained and is implementing Sheltered Instruction to support ELL students (and all others) in the regular classroom setting • Title III funds then can be used after school and in the summer to provide additional language acquisition services for ELL students • Parent ESL classes • After a student scores “Advanced Proficient for 2 years in a row, they are exited from Title III, ELL services and monitored for 2 years to be sure they are succeeding academically. • Parents will receive notification of eligibility for services and ELPA scores
Migrant Education ServicesTitle IC and Title IC Summer • Families who move to seek agricultural work are considered Migrant • Migrant Students typically move schools every school year • Each time a child changes schools they can lose up to 9 months of their education, as well as many high school credits, due to differences in State Standards and Local curriculum • Summer School • After School Tutoring • Credit Recovery • English Language Acquisition • Academic Support • Mr. Felipe, Mrs. Guerrero, Mrs. Tanner, Mrs. Eaves
Project FOCUS and PACE21st Century Programming • Federal Grant applied for through Newaygo County Community Services • Present in Hesperia, Baldwin, White Cloud, Hart, and Walkerville, as well as across the state and nation • Funding is separate from school funding • All students may participate, grades 1st through High School • Academic support • Enrichment Activities • After School, Before School and Summer Programming offered at no cost to families!
