Reasons for the Norman invasion • Dispute over who had the right to the throne after King Edward the Confessor died in January 1066. • Both William the Conqueror and Harold Godwineson believed they had to right to the throne. • Godwineson took throne after he promised William the throne.
Norman invasion • William the Conqueror was the Duke of Normandy • William used the broken promise(he was promised the throne and then was denied it) to gain papal support • Attained troops quickly and raised an army. • William attacked England with his Norman army • Fought his way to Hastings; which included burning crops and destroying agricultural production • Defeated the English easily
Feudalism • The system of political organization prevailing in Europe from the around 1066 to the 15th century. • Mutual Obligation between one person and another. • Following Battle of Hastings and Norman Conquest • Introduced by the NormansWhen Muslims Threatened to invade Rome
Feudalism • Fief is the landA lord is the land owner and gives the land in exchange for military services Vassal is a person who receives the landThe easy way to “pay” the army
Capetian dynasty • Dynasty lasted from 987-996 AD • Hugh Capet was the founding monarch and the son of a French Duke • He waved his right to the throne • Capet gained land between the Loire and Seine Rivers • Was very powerful and was considered to be unofficial ruler • Was named Hugh the Great! • After death of King Luthair Capet self appointed himself King.
