  1. Life as an Astronaut Manisha Kannan

  2. Requirements • Pass a year of Basic/Advanced Training • Familiarize themselves with weightlessness and parabolic flight • Learning variety of languages

  3. In the “Morning” • Don’t have a ‘day’ because every 24 hours, the astronauts on board see 15 dawns- So Astronauts have routine schedules • Once they wake up, they move , floating about the station to get dressed, shower, and eat

  4. Clothing/ Keeping Good Hygiene • Wear disposable clothing- thrown out every three days because there’s no washing machine in space • Astronauts have showers but they have to conserve water • Have to exercise in treadmills and fixed bikes because they can lose muscle and bone in being weightless • Toilets don’t use water

  5. Food Previously the food in space was freeze dried and nearly uneatable Presently, food has to be confined, and drinks/soups are served in plastic bags- have regular meals but the meals are restricted as to not damage the space equipment and practice good hygiene Doesn’t this look tasty? Doesn’t this look gross?

  6. Daily Work Routine • Supervise experiments • Routine maintenance • Go into space • Exercise

  7. Sleeping • Go on routine to match ancient rhythm • Not very good airflow • Sleep in sleeping bags that must be hooked to a wall

  8. The End
