  2. Introduction • Background • Jacob fleeing from Esau • Lord appeared to him as he slept • Realized God had been there • Named the place “Bethel” meaning house of God (Genesis 28:16)

  3. Introduction • Became the site of idolatry • Two places named by Jeroboam (1 Kings 12:28, 29) • Prophets referred to it as “Beth-aven” meaning house of deception (Hosea 4:15; 5:8; 10:5, 8; 12:4) • Place of idolatry (Amos 3:14; 4:4-6)

  4. Introduction • From Bethel to Beth-aven • Apostasy (2 Thessalonians 2:3) • Travel only backwards, going nowhere, but far from where one starts

  5. Collectively • Jews in the Old Testament • Turned away from God • Corrupted God’s house with idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:1-12) • Jesus cleansed the temple (Matthew 21:13)

  10. Individually • Other forms • Idolatry (Colossians 3:5) • Education, sports, TV, work, civic duties, and “such like” • Traveling from Bethel to Beth-aven

  11. Solution • Israel • “Seek the old paths” (Jeremiah 6:16-21) • Attempted by Josiah (2 Chronicles 34:31-35) • Work of the prophets • Return to Bethel

  12. Solution • The church today • Scriptural work, worship, and organization of the church • Determined by God • Return to Bethel

  13. Solution • Individually • Keep ourselves pure (1 John 1:7-9) • Return to Bethel
