  1. Windows Startup Problems

  2. In this session we will discuss; • Useful tools used to solve problems caused by hardware, applications and windows components. • Windows Vista tools that can help with startup problems (Vista Systems). • Windows XP tools that can help with startup problems (2000/XP).

  3. First……… • The best tool I have found yet to fix every problem found on a Windows Vista system is The Ultimate fix for windows Vista!

  4. Available Tools • There are many tools built into your windows operating system that are designed to help the systems owner/administrator to effectively manage their PC ,protect themselves from disastrous events, or even recover from them.

  5. Boot Tools (2000/XP/Vista) Advanced Boot Options Menu • Press F8 on windows load • Use it to troubleshoot Boot problems • Bootlogging is one option • Use events logged to Ntbtlog.txt file find source of startup errors • If the computer stops responding (hangs) before Session Manager (Smss.exe) is initialized, the log file is not created because data cannot be committed from the registry to the file. • Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and Enable Boot Logging options all create a boot log that lists all of the drivers and services that are loaded (or not loaded). The file is saved in the %SystemRoot% folder.

  10. Bootcfg (2000/XP) • Enter Bootcfg at the command prompt. • Use it to view the contents of your Boot.ini file. • Contents of typical Win XP boot.ini [boot loader]timeout=30default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS[operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

  11. Hey, I’m not a Programmer! • Don’t have to be……. • Remember these two commands. • C:/fixboot  Rewrites OS’s Boot sector on the hard drive. • C:/fixmbr  Repairs the Master Boot Record

  12. Bye Bye Boot I N I (Hey, I was a poet and didn’t know it! ) Every once in a while, you might need to edit the boot.ini file in order to fix some configuration issue like configuring a dual boot operating system. Ever since NT 3.1, it has been an ASCII text file that could be edited stored on the hard disk. Starting with Vista, everything changed. Vista maintains a boot file called the Boot Configuration Data or BCD, located on the boot volume (i.e. the volume that the operating system boots from) in a folder named BOOT.

  13. bcdedit.exe (Vista) • Supposedly, you can change it like a boot.ini • Must be logged in as administrator to access. • Changes made here are the same as changing your boot.ini file in older versions. • To access this file type bcdedit.exe at the command line.

  14. Last known good configuration • F8 at startup • Reverts to the last working configuration before changes were made to the system.

  15. Cacls.exe (2000/XP/Vista) • Use this to gain access to files when the permissions are in error or corrupted. • You can also change the Access Control List assigned to a file or group of files to control who may have access.

  16. Cipher.exe (2000/XP/Vista) • Use this to decrypt files encrypted by a user who’s account is no longer accessible.

  17. Driver signing and verification • Use verifier.exe to identify the nasty little faulty drivers causing problems in your system. It will deliberately screw with drivers and attempt to make them crash to find the ones causing problems. • Use sigverif.exe to check if the driver has been approved by Microsoft .

  18. Device Driver Rollback • Use this utility which is accessed from Device manager to replace a newly upgraded non functioning driver with the previous version which had been working until you messed with it. • Lesson learned, if it aint broke then why is you messin with it fool?!

  19. Ever had that annoying application that silently runs in the background eating up CPU cycles that somehow got loaded on your system without you ever realizing how? • Say hello to my little friend! • Sc.exe • Use it to stop or start a service that runs in the background.

  20. More tools than I have time for! • There are many more tools than we can reasonably cover in a short period of time. • There are many more options and tools available to you that are built right into the Operating System to make your job as an Administrator easier. • I know if someone made a pocket guidebook to this chapter for the service tech to carry around to jobs, it would probably get used a lot and the author would probably get rich in the process.

  21. Question • What has been coined by some as the ultimate “Windows Vista” fix?
