  2. What is Conflict? • A disagreement between two or more people

  3. Three Types of Conflict • LOSE/LOSE: nobody is happy with the outcome 2.WIN/LOSE: only one side is happy with the outcome 3. WIN/WIN: everybody feels good about the outcome

  4. Conflict is an OPPURTUNITY for: • Communication • Show how they see a situation differently • Understand each other better • Agree on how to settle their differences in a positive way so both disputants are happy

  5. Other Words for Conflict

  6. How to handle conflict: • Avoidance: pretend disagreement never happened • Persuasion: use power or force to make other person give in • Accommodation: these people give in or give up (pretend to agree) • Compromise: give up something to get something they want more

  7. How to handle conflict: • Communication/Collaboration: Peacemakers listen, respect, take responsibility, work together, and agree • How to collaborate: • Apologize • Taking a Chance (rock, paper, scissors or flip coin) • Mediate (get help to solve problem)

  8. What is Mediation: • A process to help people talk about their conflict with a person who is not involved.

  9. What is a Mediator: • The person who talks to the people having a problem (conflict) Mediator

  10. What is a Disputant: • The people involved in a disagreement Disputant 2 Disputant 1

  11. What is Co-Mediation: • Two mediators work together as a team

  12. Jobs of a Mediator: • Helps disputant listen • Listen without making judgments • Asks questions without blaming • Helps disputants brainstorm ways to solve disagreement (don’t tell them what to do)

  13. Jobs of a Mediator: • Writes down the decisions and promises on the AGREEMENT form • Mediator and disputants sign the form • Mediator does not force disputants to attend • BE CONFIDENTIAL!! Respect the disputants privacy
