5 Big Ideas in Reading Instruction • Phonemic Awareness • Phonics • Fluency • Vocabulary • Text Comprehension
Guided Reading • Each child is somewhere on the path of these 5 big ideas to becoming an accomplished reader. • This is where guided reading comes into play. • Our job is to find out exactly where each child is and meet them there and move forward in their reading development.
Guided Reading • Why? • If children are taught at their instructional reading level as (opposed to frustration or independent level), they make more growth at a faster rate.
Leveled Books • Leveled from A-Z (Fountas and Pinnell) • The children do not know and we recommend not talking with your child about his/her level.
Expectations • 1st quarter - D • 2nd quarter - E • 3rd quarter - G • 4th quarter - I
Goals of Guided Reading • Develop fluency • Detect errors and self correct • Decode unknown words using strategies • Develop comprehension skills
Reading Strategies • Does the word make sense in the sentence? • Look for Key Clues (pictures)
Reading Strategies • Listen to How it Sounds • Look for Little Words in Big Words (Ex: window)
Reading Strategies • Search for Similarities
Reading Strategies • Backtrack and read again • Skip it and go on
Always Ask Yourself • Does it look right? • Does it sound right? • Does it make sense?
