  1. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Heli Hirsik XIB

  2. The Picture of Dorian Gray • The only published novel by Oscar Wilde • 20 June 1980 in Lippincott's monthly magazine • The book- April 1981 • A work of classic gothic horror fiction with a strong Faustian theme • Major changes in the 1981 edition

  3. The main characters • Dorian Gray- a handsome and pure-hearted gentleman who promises his soul to maintain his youth forever • Basil Hallward- an artist, the author of the portrait • Lord Henry "Harry" Wotton- a witty, cynical,       hedonistic dandy, bad influence to Dorian  • Sibyl Vane- Dorian's lover, an actress who commits suicide

  4. Themes • The purpose of art • Influence and responsibility • Aestheticism and duplicity • The supremacy of youth and beauty • The superficial nature of the society

  5. Quotations • The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim. • All art is quite useless • Beauty is a form of genius- is higher, indeed, than genius, as it needs no explanation. • The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world it's own shame. •  Experience was of no ethical value. It was merely the name men gave to their mistakes • Each time that one loves is the only time one has ever loved.
