What is assessment? • A central feature of learning and the curriculum • Aligned with delivery and learning goals • A way to measure student performance of course learning outcomes • Tests students knowledge, skills and behaviours • Part of our accountability/certification role • An integral part of the learning process(1) • Engages students in productive activity • Encourages students independence and accountability • Actively promotes student learning • Inducts students into their vocation or profession
Why assess? • Enable students to measure their achievement • Provide feedback to improve student performance • Help students consolidate their learnig • Provide opportunities for students to demonstrate competence and employability • Motivate students to move to deeper learning • Help students to make educational/career choices • Provide feedback to teachers on their effectiveness • Provide statistics for internal and external agencies
David Boud (1988) • Assessment methods & requirements have a greater influence on how and what students learn than any other single factor. This influence may well be of greater importance than the impact of teaching materials.
