  3. What disciplines are you from? • Use the whiteboard to write what specific discipline you are from

What is ILab? • Hybrid method of embedding Information Literacy into course content which utilizes technology to assess and track student progress • Students access the ILab “course” and complete pre and post tests as well as homework through Blackboard in addition to attending face to face instruction over the course of 3 sessions • Feedback is personalized and tailored to each student’s topic • Students are given points for completing all the ILab elements

  5. What do you currently do for Information Literacy instruction-as a librarian or faculty? A. Nothing B. One time instruction C. Multiple sessions D. Credit course

  6. What types of technology do you use or have you seen? A. Clickers B. Blackboard or similar C. Wikis, blogs, etc. D. Nothing

  7. A bit of History • Summer grant in collaboration with 2 English Faculty members. Began with 4 sections-we now have 17 • A way to get students exposed to Information Literacy for more than one session • Combined Information Literacy concepts with course content • Went back and forth between BlackBoard and Google Docs

Where is it being utilized? • PSYCHOLOGY -Find information about a psychological disorder such as symptoms, treatment, causes etc. and write a paper and present findings • ENGLISH -Write an argument essay on a chosen topic • NURSING -Write an evidence-based essay on a chosen Nursing topic such as music therapy, artificial nails or the use of soap vs antibacterial gels

  10. The Google Docs ILab • Pros -A lot of students already had Google accounts, no need for additional passwords -Could access the information easily -Tailored Feedback • Cons -Students did not fill in information completely -A lot of time spent scoring tests and homework

  12. The BlackBoard ILab • Pros -All surveys and tests are scored, cutting down on time spent scoring -Still allows for individualized feedback to a certain degree • Cons -Artificial addition in courses that do not use this technology -Additional time spent with passwords, logging in etc.

  14. Pre/Post Test • Currently, we are using the Research Readiness Self-Assessment developed by the University of Michigan. • Multiple choice • Individualized Feedback based on student scores-links to further information via e-mail • Compares perceived skills with actual scores

Success! • What students are saying -(ILab) gave me other ways to search for topics and the librarian let me know what I was doing wrong -I learned how to research a topic more efficiently and how to word my searches more accurately -Over 90% of students said the technology used was helpful to their overall experience • Scores -On average, scores went up by about 20% between the pre and the post-tests starting with Fall 2007. -Sample scores for Fall 2008

  29. Future Plans • Substitute one-time instruction with ILab model in conjunction with an Information Literacy Tutorial • Possibly move towards a certificate or credit course
