Conclusions • A novel circularly polarized antenna was designed for Japanese RFID readers. • Because of its compact size (60 mm × 60 mm × 0.8 mm), the proposed antenna is suitable for use in RFID handheld readers. • In addition, the optimized antenna operated in the desired performance band of 948 MHz to 954 MHz with an axial ratio of less than 3 dB, a return loss of more than 10 dB, and a 3 dB axial-ratio beamwidth larger than 80°, which meets the Japanese RFID system require ments.
