Run-On vs. Comma Splice A run-onis a grammar error made up of 2 or more sentences incorrectly joined or “run” together without punctuation to separate them. A comma splice is the most common type of run-on sentence. It occurs when you have a comma placed in the middle of 2 run-on sentences. Ex. We will travel to California on vacation my family has chosen to fly to our destination. (Run-On) Why is this a run-on? We will travel to California on vacation, my family has chosen to fly to our destination. ( Comma Splice) Why is this a comma splice?
3 WAYS TO CORRECT • Separate the run-on into 2 sentences Ex. We will travel to California on vacation. My family has chosen to fly to our destination. 2) Separate the run-on into 2 sentences and place a comma ( , ) with a coordinating conjunction (BOYS FAN) that follows Ex. We will travel to California on vacation, and my family has chosen to fly to our destination. 3. Semicolon: 2 ways to use- (1) Separate the run-on into 2 sentences with a semicolon ( ; ) (2) Separate the run-on into 2 sentences with a semicolon (;) and place a transition word (however, therefore, nevertheless, etc.) with a comma after Ex. (1) We will travel to California on vacation ;my family has chosen to fly to our destination. (2)We will travel to California on vacation ; however, my family has chosen to fly to our destination.
