  1. Order of Operations By Jill Buckett

  2. First, here’s an example… Angora Rabbits are raised for their fur. Each rabbit produces enough fur in one year to make 8 pairs of gloves or 2 sweaters. Joyce Clark combed enough fur from her rabbits to make 720 pairs of gloves and 210 sweaters. How many rabbits does she own?

  3. Sort it all out… The number of rabbits The number of needed to make 720rabbits needed to pairs of glovesmake 210 sweaters 720  8 + 210  2 90 +105 = 195

  4. When an expression has more than one operation, you need to use order of operations to solve the problem.

  5. PEMDAS? P arenthesis E xponents M ultiplication D ivision A ddition S ubtraction

  6. Just remember this… P lease E xcuse M y D ear A unt S ally

  7. So… 1. Do all the problems in the parentheses first. Also do all the operations above and below a division bar. 2. Do all the exponents next. 3. Do all multiplication from left to right. 4. Do all division from left to right. 5. Do all addition from left to right. 6.Do all subtraction from left to right. If any of these are not in the problem, skip that step.

  8. Lets try one together! (8 – 3) x 5 + 17 • First, do the parentheses: (8 – 3) = 5 • Next, since there are no exponents do the multiplication: (5) x 5 = 25 • Next, since there is no division do the addition: 25 + 17 = 42 • The answer is 42. • Since there is no subtraction, you’re done! • Make sure to look over your work!

  9. Try one by yourself now! 4 + 3 x 2 Remember PEMDAS! Look on the next slide for the correct work and answer. No peeking!

  10. The Answer 4 + 3 x 2 • First, since there are no parentheses, do the exponents: 4 or 4 x 4 = 16. • Next, do the multiplication: 3 x 2 = 6. • Now, do the addition: 16 + 6 = 22. • And since there is no subtraction, you’re done! • The answer is 22. Did you get it right? If you didn’t get the correct answer, look back in your work to see what you did wrong.
