Roche Bobois and the sustainable development • Since the launch of the LEGEND collection in 2006 (totally eco-conceived), the brand has adopted an environmentally responsible approach, which is applied at all levels of our business. • Reduce the impacts on the environment at each step of the product life cycle • Choice of materials • more effective • less pollutant
Suppliers 1 – Manufacturing process improvements 2 – Material choices 3 – Norm
Suppliers – Manufacturing process improvements 1 – Manufacturing process improvements • Promotion of eco-design practices (in accordance with the specifications of the CTBA - Technical Centre for Wood and Furniture) when embarking on any new projects with designers, • Gradual phasing out of particle board in favour of block board, • Elimination of solvent adhesives and finishes in favour of aqueous phase finishes, technological monitoring of innovative and less energy-intensive systems and materials, • Weight-saving research to minimise environmental transport costs, • Use of recyclable and reusable packaging (wood, cardboard), • Manufacturing of 46% of its furniture production at ISO 14 001-Environment certified factories, • Development of a chair and sofa eco-design programme at two of its main factories (hessian webbing, water-based adhesives, elimination of synthetic foams, leather treated with vegetable tannins and without chrome salt, EN 45.014 standard dyes).
Suppliers – Manufacturing process improvements 1 – Manufacturing process improvements • Lastly, Roche Bobois has requested an energy profile improvement action plan from its logistics and transport partners, and this has resulted in the following action steps: • Waste management (France and export packaging with the objective of reaching a 95% scrap recycling rate). • Reduction of energy consumption (an eco-driving training scheme, consumption monitoring), • Upgrade of vehicles in circulation, with Euro 5 and AdBlue standard tests, transport load optimisation and the reduction of empty runs, • HEQ referential for construction of logistics warehouses currently underway. • As a result, Roche Bobois is putting its environmental responsibility policy into practice on a daily basis, in order to reinforce its progress in this area and in the area of design and quality.
Suppliers – Material choices 2 – Material choices • PEFC/FSC wood • A standard that guarantees that the wood comes from sustainably managed forests (i.e. no clear-cutting, respect for flora and fauna, traceability, etc). • Use of an abundant natural material, Burgundy oak. • Selecting PEFC/FSC certified solid timber. • Accepting the natural characteristics of the material • => knots, tear marks, changes in the wood's visual aspect over time, etc. • Selecting a lumber mill that makes use of sawing waste (for heating, drying out the wood, etc). • Limiting the transport of materials to the bare minimum (sawing, manufacture).
Suppliers – Material choices 2 – Material choices • Using as little energy as possible in the manufacturing process. • Selecting assembly methods that limit or cut out the use of ironware. • Selecting appropriate finishes: water based glue, colours and varnish. • Limiting waste and discharge into the atmosphere (the factory is ISO 14000 certified). • Separating and making use of waste packaging, reusing (collection in warehouses), recycling. • Using the most appropriate form of transport to outlets and then to the customer's home. • Providing the customer with information, including a purchase document, maintenance information and information on how to dispose of the object when it comes to the end of its lifespan. • These improvements have led to a 30% reduction in the total environmental impact of the energy used (technical documentation available on request).
Suppliers - Norms 3 – Norms NORM [no:m] Process of developing and agreeing upon technical standards. A standard is a document that establishes uniform engineering or technical specifications, criteria, methods, processes, or practices. ISO [`aɪsoʊ] The International Organization for Standardization (Organisation internationale de normalisation), widely known as ISO is an international standard setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations.
ISO 14001 - Environment • ISO 14001 specifies the actual requirements for an Environmental management system. • This standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to: • Implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system • Assure itself of its conformance with its own stated environmental policy (those policy commitments of course must be made) • Demonstrate conformance • Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations • Seek certification of its environmental management system by an external third party organization • Make a self-determination of conformance Suppliers: 3R Theorema Tumidei Turrini & Jocilma => In process
ISO 9000 - Quality • ISO 9000 is a family of standards for Quality management systems. • A set of procedures that cover all key processes in the business • Monitoring processes to ensure they are effective • Keeping adequate records • Checking output for defects, with appropriate and corrective action where necessary • Regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system itself for effectiveness • Facilitating continual improvement Suppliers: Turrini Tumidei Jocilma => In process
Eco-conceived models The gains are measured by comparing these new pieces with their counterparts from the same supplier. In fact, Roche Bobois has chosen to work with Turrini, company which is particularly implied in the material since the benefit from the certification ISO 14001 and has received in 2009 the long term development trophy (Durable Consummation) given by the Brittany area.
LEGEND collection designed by Christophe Delcourt The LEGEND collection heralded the beginnings of the Roche Bobois eco-design practices in 2006. • Use of an abundant natural material, Burgundy oak. • PEFC wood certified solid timber. • Assembly methods limiting or cutting out the use of ironware. • Finishes: water based glue, colours and varnish. • Factory is ISO 14000 certified.
SAGA collection designed by Christophe Delcourt • Use of available wood that are not in danger, Virginia poplar and European oak. • Completely realized in slatted panels (assembled with white glue), there is no exhalation of formaldehyde nor of urée-formol • Solid wood choice certified FSC (name certifying the wood is from durable and contained forests, no dry cut, respect of the vegetal ...) • With the exception of the interlocks easily removable the conception is 100% wood mono-material: no heterogenic material to separate for recycling • Acceptation of the characteristics proper to this material: webbing, evolution of the wood aspect during the drying of the wood • Choice of a sawmill, using and recycling the particles (for heating the factory, drying the wood….) • Limitation of the material transport towards the fabrication sites (sawmill, factory) • Management of the energy quantity for the transformation • Choice of assembly modes: glue and no hardware • Finishes choices: glue, water stains, management of the exhalation of debris • Sorting of the debris and packaging: reemploy (recuperation in warehouses) recycling • Transport optimized until the pieces hits the stores, then until delivery to the customer • Information given to the consumer: proof of sale, care instruction and management of a piece in age to die
TIE BREAK sofa designed by C. Belcourt & J. Gauthier • Bamboo is an ecological fibre: • Naturally resistant • Does not need any pesticides and very few water. • It is antibacterial and very absorbent by nature. • Bamboo is a fibre which “breaths” and is able to adapt to any climatic conditions. Moreover, it is shows an exceptional resistance to abrasion and passes successfully most the fire tests without any additional treatment.
ASSEMBLAGE designed by Stéphane Lebrun • ASSEMBLAGE is an eco-conceived collection, completely wood made with water-base solvent. • FABRICATION, DETAILS & FINISHES • 100% solid wood, oak or walnut frame, « Cryptoméria » slated panels • Assembly specifications : • dovetails (console drawers), • built-in pieces (keys) on the tops, • solid pieces (legs) made in 3 sizes. • grooved joints under the tops • the extension leaves on the dining table can be handled with only one hand • FRAME (legs and crossbars): 2 wood species (oak and walnut)
